Microdermbrasion is a fabulous resurfacing treatment that gently exfoliates layers of the epidermis. A treatment that increases the cell renewal process, combats fine lines and wrinkles, reduces superficial hyperpigmentation (in combination with a targeted home care regime) and refines pores. It can give the a skin a fresh, smooth and luminous appearance.
There are several different mediums for microdermabrasion, the two main types being crystal microdermabrasion or diamond microdermabrasion.
Crystal microdermabrasion is the most well known, it is the oldest version having become popular in the early nineties. Crystal Microdermabrasion is an ablative procedure that will remove the outer surface of the skin by means of force or friction. Crystal microdermabrasion treatments involve the use of a hand-held device that propels a high-speed flow of aluminum oxide crystals that are “blasted” out onto the skin. At the same time, the machine’s vacuum system sucks away dirt, dead cells and used crystals.
Diamond Microdermabrasion is a modern form of microdermabrasion. It’s an abrasive procedure that will remove the outer surface of the skin by means of a diamond tip wand. The tip head is gently moved over the surface of the skin and the gentle abrasive action of the tip removes the top layers of the epidermis, while the machine’s vacuum system sucks away dirt, debris and skin cells.
Both work, there is no question about that, but as a facialist who has worked professionally with both types of methods, I personally prefer the diamond method. It’s superior, for many reasons. Let me explain.
The old crystal version has a one size tip head, and also one level that the crystals are blown out over the skin. This really limits not only treating the skin around the eye area, but it also makes it impossible to bespoke a treatment to specific skin types or concerns.
The modern diamond system however has several different wand heads, ranging from deeply abrasive to lightly abrasive. This enables your therapist to adapt and adjust the level and depth of the treatment to suit the skin type that is being treated, as well as adapting the facial to different areas of the face and decolletage. The tip heads also vary in size, large to treat larger surface areas such as the decolletage, neck and cheeks, to very small heads which are more accurate in treating delicate areas such as the skin around the eyes and corners of the nose. This means that vital and vulnerable areas near to the clients eyes and mouth are able to be abraded and suctioned off much more accurately using the diamond treatment. Making use of the modern “wand” enables your practitioner to entirely avoid the risk posed by stray crystals causing damage to sensitive areas.
Another thing to consider is the irregular shape of the oxidised crystals. Many dermatologist’s recommend that sensitive skin types should avoid crystal microdermabrasion as the irregularity of the shape of he crystal may in fact cause sensitivity and even inflammation. So if you are prone to sensitivity or skin conditions such as eczema, this may be worth considering when researching which microdermabrasion to book.
Lastly, the one thing I found quite frustrating when it came to working with the crystal version of the machine, is that it was quite difficult to completely remove the remnants of the crystals from the skin post treatment. The last thing you want to be doing following a exfoilation treatments is to constantly go back over the skin again and again to further remove the crystals, as this of course can increase the risk of irritation. But at the same time you do not wish to leave the client with a similar feeling of having residue of sand on their face.
Here at Aquavie we upgraded our Microdermabrasion machine a few years ago from a crystal machine to a diamond version. We are not only able to change the tip heads on our machine, but we can also adjust the level of suction, this enables us to truly bespoke every treatment to each individual client. We are the only spa or beauty business in Tonbridge to use the diamond technique.
