The Benefits of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning,  at first glance this treatment may look a little bit daunting, and dare I say it uncomfortable.  Trust me when I say it’s neither. Dermaplaning is a relatively new advanced exfoliation and resurfacing treatment that has taken America by storm.  It started to gain popularity in the UK last year, but it was only this spring when the high profile beauty editors started writing about it that demand increased on the High Street.

So what is it? This advanced youth boosting treatment should be performed by a Level 3 qualified therapist, who has undergone clinical training in this treatment.  Or by a dermatologist.  The treatment involves using a single blade scalpel to gently remove the hair and dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.

Dermaplaning targets the ‘peach fuzz’ (the invisible, baby hairs that commonly crop up on cheeks, the upper lip and around the hair line). This hair is technically known as vellus hair and is distinctly different to the dark, thick terminal hair, which grows on other areas of our body. Another important point to make is that vellus hair doesn’t grow back stubbly, so the myth that dermaplaning will cause your hair to grow back thicker and like stubble is exactly that, a myth.  The treatment itself is relatively quick to do (about 40-45 minutes), although you may find your therapist may combine your treatment with other facial machines or masks, these other methods are used to simply enhance the affects of the dermaplaning. So you leave the spa looking renewed and glowing.

Is any down time needed? No, none. You may look a little red after a treatment, but no more so than a good thorough microdermabrasion or light peel treatment. You’ll be good to go straight back to work, or your daily routine immediately after your treatment.  It is imperative however that you wear an SPF.

So what are the benefits?  Well there are many, first and foremost, this is taking resurfacing to the next level, so not only does the treatment remove layers of the epidermis but it removes vellus hair too.  Any type exfoliation helps to kick start our cell renewal process, but some are more effective than others. Dermaplaning is exceptionally results driven.  It targets fine lines and wrinkles, refines open pores, softens and illuminates skin, helps to increase the absorption and effectiveness of cosmecuetical products applied topically post treatment and it also helps treat hyper-pigmentation (alongside a good home care regime).   The most talked about advantage of dermaplaning is how much of a difference it makes when applying makeup. Celebrity make up artists have been reportedly advising their high profile clients to treat themselves to a dermaplaning treatment prior to important red carpet events!

We recently posted a vloggers video on our Aquavie Facebook Page that shows our clients what they can expect to experience during a treatment.
